Nighttime Thunderstorm in Long Xuyên: Finding Warmth in Stories

Warm gusts of wind whip through the streets of Long Xuyên, mingling with the rich scent of earth soaked in rain — the air feels alive, electric. Walk with me beneath this ancient sky, torn open by sheets of lightning, and feel the drum of thunder in our bones. It’s the kind of night that insists we seek shelter, but the storm only enhances the vibrancy of the city as it drums on corrugated roofs.

Inside a small, dimly lit café nestled off one of the quieter streets, locals huddle over aromatic bowls of phở. We can stay here, dry and safe, cradling the warmth of our own bowls as the rain rages. The fragrant steam rises from the broth, cutting through the humid air with a promise of comfort. It's a welcome contrast to the dampness clinging to our skin.

Seated across from me is an elderly man, his fingers stained dark by the tannins of rattan strips, evidence of decades spent weaving in Chợ Mới. The rattan furniture here is unlike any other in Vietnam. The unique bending technique was brought over by Chinese craftsmen in the 19th century, a fact he mentions proudly, flicking his gaze to the rain-streaked window. His eyes dart between the flashing skies and the wicker chair legs propped against the wall, as though drawing a connection between the storm and this long craft tradition.

“Storms like these,” he tells me, “used to come without warning.” Each story he unfolds brings alive another dimension of life here. He talks of a river terrified into silence and a market thriving at dawn. Chợ Long Xuyên họp từ 3 giờ sáng — a tapestry woven from fishermen's shouts and the slippery dance of fresh fish and prawns, straight from Tứ giác Long Xuyên, twisting in nets under first light.

While the thunderous night stretches on, we could leaf through maps and travel guides, piecing together tomorrow’s adventures from the safety of shadowed walls. There's much to plan. We’ll visit the market at dawn, fingers crossed for clear skies so that the sun's first light can gild the morning's catch. We’ll wander into Chợ Mới when the skies clear and lose ourselves in the intricate lacework of handcrafted rattan.

Tonight, though, we’re wrapped in stories and the intimacy of shared shelter. The storm, with all its wet violence, becomes nothing more than a backdrop — a grand canvas for the quiet pulse of life indoors. Even through the sounds of rain hammering the earth, the telling of tales knits the whole experience into something immensely inviting.

Let the storm carry on. We’ll learn the secrets it stirs and chart our journey across the city tomorrow, guided by the night’s storytelling warmth.
