The temperature reads 27°C but feels like a steaming 31°C. Somehow the rising scent of wet earth blends with the salty fragrance of the sea, carried by a 17 km/h breeze.
In this soaked state, the Kiên Giang coast stretches out into the darkness with its mysterious cluster of 140 islands and islets, most uninhabited. Somewhere beyond the horizon, the squid fishing fleet has flickered to life. A human constellation set 20km offshore, 800 boats dance across the waterline, each one a beacon powered by generators. Their lights break the monotony of the black expanse, enticing squids to the surface in a ritual that's as much tradition as livelihood.
Walking through Rạch Giá's market streets is less appealing on a night like this. Instead, I head for the covered markets, seeking refuge under tin roofs where life continues uninterrupted by the weather. Inside, the chatter is muffled, almost serene, as if the rain symphonically tempers the vendors’ calls. Here, I spot a vendor serving up bowls of cháo mực—a local rainy-day specialty. This squid porridge, warming, rich and steaming, is the perfect counterpart to the muggy weather outside. It's a simple dish that exudes comfort, and each spoonful carries the essence of the ocean and the patience of a slow-cooked meal.
After dinner, I decide to walk back to my guesthouse. The rain provides a different beauty when watching it from a dry, comfortable spot. Sitting on the wooden porch, I pour myself a cup of tra dai—the local red tea that's aromatic and fortifying. As I sit and sip, the rain creates mesmerizing patterns over the rice fields, intricately weaving stories in droplets. It's moments like these when nature and human life intertwine, forging a deep calm that seems to belong to another era.
The night may be governed by the elements, but there's a certain life to it—one that's best observed quietly. This is the essence of a summer night in Rạch Giá. It's not merely about escaping the rain but embracing a place where within each droplet lies a world inviting exploration.
