A Drizzly Night in Tam Đường: Springtime Adventures

The drizzle taps quietly against the corrugated metal roof of the small café in Tam Đường, creating a soothing rhythm that blends with the soft buzz of conversations in Vietnamese and H'Mông. It's spring, and the air is thick with humidity, wrapping around me like a persistent, albeit slightly clammy, embrace. The warmth of 25°C feels closer to 29°C with an 78% humidity seeping into every breathable space, only slightly nudged by a gentle 4 km/h breeze.

Mornings in Tam Đường often promise the majestic views of the Pu Ta Leng range, shrouded under the clouds. The trek to Vietnam’s second highest peak requires more commitment and clearer skies. Tonight, however, the mountain is hidden, veiled by mist and the persistent drizzle. Instead of preparing for a trekking adventure, tonight is about slowing down, savoring the richness of local life.

Sin Suối Hồ village isn’t so far, known for its efforts at community-based tourism and hawking vibrant orchids that initially greeted the chill of 1,400 meters above sea level. In weather like this, I'd usually be elbow-deep in the blooms, but the rain guides us inward.

Tonight, the gentle flicker of a lantern in the café is inviting and promises refuge. This café, a modest establishment with walls adorned by photos of past adventurers, serves up a bowl of thắng cố — a hearty horse meat stew, perfect for a drizzly evening. Its fragrance is robust with the scent of anise and ginger, pulling you closer into its warmth. The steam mingles into the humid air, creating a blend of aromas that is both filling and comforting.

The café's owner, Mr. Hao, sits across from me at the low wooden table. "These nights always remind me of my first trek up Pu Ta Leng," he says with a grin, poking at his pipe, releasing curls of sweet-smelling smoke that weave through the dampness. We talk about the orchids in Sin Suối Hồ, and how they seem to flourish despite, or perhaps because of, such drizzling nights.

Earlier in the day, the markets bustled under their tarps, clothes snapping like sails in the breeze amidst the wafting scents of fresh greens, sticky rice, and fish sauce. Now, as the market rests, the temple across the street offers a silent watch, its brightly painted figurines of protective dragons glinting with moisture. One nods an invitation to explore, though its doors remain closed shut against the encroaching night.

The light drizzle continues, a lullaby to those who travel and those who stay. This moment beneath the Ta Phin disco sign feels as though it’s been paused intentionally, a spontaneous act of hospitality by the springtime rain of Tam Đường. The drizzle is more than weather—here, it’s part of the conversation, part of the night’s narrative, binding together the community through warmth, stories, and shared meals.
